I was originally going to use the sarcastic title "Helpful VMS" until I realized I might someday actually have a photo of a genuinely helpful one.
The reason this variable-message sign is so unhelpful is its location. The accident in question is only a mile away, at the very next interchange -- so there's no way motorists seeing this sign can do anything to avoid it. If this same message could be placed much further upstream on I-270, some drivers might have a chance of taking an alternate route -- though there aren't any realistic alternatives for most through traffic on this highway. Anyway, there aren't any other VMS's before this one for over 14 miles.

there's one over on 33/161 between the post rd and perimeter loop exits - so even though it's not on 270 it's closer than 14 miles. And it's about as helpful as that one most of the time!
